Patriarchs of Nature and European Movement

PATRIARCHS OF NATURE AND EUROPEAN MOVEMENT

PRESENT THEIR JOINT PROJECTS

AT THE PRESS ROOM OF THE CHAMBER OF DEPUTIES

On April 7, the Memorandum of Understanding between the European Movement chaired by Pier Virgilio Dastoli and the Patriarchs of Nature Association chaired by Sergio Guidi was presented at the Chamber of Deputies.

Following the relationships developed between the European Movement and the social promotion association Patriarchs of Nature, on the occasion of the donation and planting of the daughter of the largest oak tree in Molise in Jelsi in July 2024, the institutional collaboration was born that led to the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the parties.

This document is aimed at protecting and enhancing Italian biodiversity, with particular reference to the monumental progenitor trees of our woods and forests, plants that have proven over the centuries and millennia to be the most resistant to adversity and the most suitable for dealing with future environmental stresses, including climate change.

The European Union has great attention to the protection of biodiversity, this issue being at the top of community policies; this is demonstrated by the laws enacted, including Natura 2000 Network, the European Strategy for Biodiversity where the European Union reaffirms the global commitment to protect 1/3 of the planet by 2030, a key element of the European Green Deal through various actions, including the planting of 3 billion trees. In addition to the objective of safeguarding this biodiversity, it is hoped that the experience gained by the Patriarchi association in recovering the DNA of large trees in Italy can also be a reference for other European countries that are losing their biodiversity, reducing their possibilities of fighting climate change.
